Harold Purcell
Lyricist, Playright,Composer and Musician.
There follows a selection of collected photographs and theatre programme memorabilia, some of which was kindly loaned for the purpose of remembrance of Harold & his work. Probably his most memorable works in conjunction with Harry Parr Davies, were those that follow in the thumbnail gallery below. Namely, "Blue For A Boy", starring Hermene French, Fred Emney, Richard Hearne & Co and "The Glorious Days" with Anna Neagle in a multiplicity of roles. Also the Stage and Film versions of "The Lisbon Story" immortalised by Patricia Burke in both productions. Sadly, we have just heard of her passing (Dec 2003). Other, perhaps less well known productions, but nevertheless successful on the London Stage were "The Shepherd Show" named after the man at the centre of the action, Firth Shepherd and, "Jenny Jones", an ambitious and colourful musical with lavish costumes and the stunningly beautiful Carol Lynne as the attractive and vivacious leading lady.
The above mentioned productions were all in collaboration with Harry Parr Davies of "Sing As We Go" fame, but Harold's work was wide ranging and varied and he also wrote the lyrics and adapted the plays for many, many more.
